The simulation subcommittee meeting began slightly after 11am on Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Marriott Hotel. A total of 46 members and friends attended the meeting. The meeting agenda can be found at:

There were three excelent presentations on the simulation modeling. I am proud to point out that the "simulation guidance" was developed by Hong Li, who volunteered for it.

In addition, Steve Shelby at the Siemens ITS made a short announcement on "Assessing Intersection Safety with Simulation."

Due to time limits, additional agenda items were not discussed. There were left for Summer 2008 subcommittee meeting.

I'd like to point out that the subcommittee, just like any other committee at TRB, is being operated by the members and friends who volunteered. If you're interested in volunteering for one of topics shown below or any new topics, please let me know.

  • Guidance on how to use simulation
  • Development of better user interface
  • Online resources (server from TSSC website)
  • Animation of internal controller logics
  • API documentation
  • Oversaturated conditions
  • Aspects of simulation (HILS)
  • Driving simulator + Microscopic simulation
  • Driving behavior using NGSIM data
  • HCQS, NCHRP 3-85 working papers on HCM limitations and use of simulation (will send the link to the members for comments)
  • Invite controller vendors for SILS capabilities
Note that there topics were generated during brainstorming disucssion at the past  subcommittee meeting.

TRB Traffic Signal Systems Committee Simulation Subcommittee meeting was held on Sunday, July 22, 2007 at the Double Tree Hotel in San Jose, CA.

Several voluntary activities conducted so far include:
  • Aleksandar Stevanovic (aleks@trafficlab.utah.edu) submitted an updated hardware-in-the-loop-simulation (HILS) bibliography. You can download an MS word file here:
  • Simulation Guidance Document (Hong Li, Lin Zhang & Md. S. Chowdhury). Draft outline can be found here:
If you have any comments, please let Lin (LZhang@camsys.com) and Md (chowdhury@pbworld.com) know.
  • Driving behavior using NGSIM data (Md Chowdhury & Lin Zhang). Preliminary results should be available before January 2008.

Simulation subcommittee meeting presentation material can be downloaded here:

A few action items are:
  • Monty Abbas will work with Brian Park on the "traffic simulation modeling archive" website.
  • Doug Gettman and Brian Park will work on the data needs for Greg Kruger at Michigan DOT.
  • Brian Park will contact Ken Courage and Mohammad Hadi for joint efforts on the traffic simulation modeling archive website.

Video Podcast of the entire meeting can be found at

You'll need QuickTime player to watch the video podcast.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or comments.
